Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Covering politically sensitive issues presents unique ethical challenges for journalists, particularly in regions like Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, where politics significantly influences social and economic life. Journalists are tasked with maintaining neutrality, accuracy, and fairness while navigating pressures from political entities, the public, and media owners (Olayemi & Bala, 2023). Politically sensitive issues often involve conflicting narratives, and the journalist’s role in accurately representing these narratives without bias is critical for fostering trust and transparency (Ibrahim et al., 2024). However, external factors, such as threats to safety, editorial bias, and political patronage, often undermine the journalist’s ability to adhere to ethical principles (Ahmed, 2024). This study investigates the ethical dilemmas faced by journalists covering politically sensitive issues in Lafia and proposes strategies for promoting ethical journalism in the region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Journalists in Lafia face significant ethical dilemmas when reporting on politically sensitive issues. These dilemmas stem from pressures to align with political agendas, fears of reprisals, and the challenge of navigating complex political landscapes (Abdullahi & Garba, 2023). Unethical practices such as biased reporting and sensationalism compromise the quality and credibility of political journalism, potentially inflaming tensions and eroding public trust in the media (Yakubu, 2024). While ethical guidelines exist, their application in politically charged contexts remains inconsistent, highlighting the need for a deeper understanding of the challenges journalists face and the development of practical solutions.
